Chamma Ling, VALLE DE BRAVO, MEXICO, a Bön Buddhist retreat center, is home of the Great Bön Stupa for World Peace. Valle de Bravo, is located in central Mexico and has an international airport (Taluca), just 40 minutes from the retreat center. The center has a Gompa (meditation hall), rustic bathrooms for men and women, rustic kitchen, outdoor dining area, and dharma shop. Don´t miss this opportunity to be in the beautiful Stupa for World Peace and to circumambulate it as a powerful means for purification.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Parking

The parking lot is about 1 mile from Chamma Ling.

The walk is uphill and takes about 20 minutes.

It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes.

We will have a free shuttle service from the parking area to the stupa and vice versa for disabled and elderly.
Parking will be monitored throughout the event and will cost mex$20 ($1.75US) for full day. To prevent bringing too many cars to the parking site we suggest that you car pool with other participants. The meeting place will be where the road to Los Alamos starts. The meeting time will be 1 hour before the event.

What to bring

In the Tibetan tradition, the consecration of a stupa is a sacred event of great significance. We suggest dressing formally for this unique and great occasion.

We recommend:

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Sweater or jacket
  • Hat and sunscreen.
  • Water Bottle

Children

Children are welcome at the event but we kindly ask their parents to be responsible guardians. Please keep them silent during the ceremony as a mark of respect to teachers and to support a contemplative atmosphere and to allow clarity of sound recordings.

Valle de Bravo accommodations during events

You can find a hotel list of different categories and prices. In some of these hotels we have discounts for participants. They are marked. Please mention you are attending the Garuda event.

Camping

There will be a limited camping space allocated at Chamma Ling. It will be open from Monday November 29th to Dec 5. No food service will be available. The cost for camping is mex $50 daily per person ($4.00USD) including facilities.

Chamma Ling Retreat Center

This is where the Great Stupa was built. It’s located 40minutes drive from the town of Valle de Bravo, in an oak and conifer forest.

Climate

The land is 8500 feet above sea level.
In December the sun rises at seven o’clock and the sunset is at six o'clock.
The temperature changes dramatically from noon that may be 75°F to 39°F after sunset. The town of Valle de Bravo is slightly warmer.

How to get to Valle de Bravo

From Mexico City to Valle de Bravo (See map 1)

By car

Go west on Consituyentes Ave. or Paseo de La Reforma Ave. and take the toll highway MEX -15 to Toluca. Disregard the sign that says Valle de Bravo libre.
Once you pass the Outlet Malls and the village of Lerma, go over a bridge. Immediately after the bridge at kilometer 50 take a right on the Toluca (A-7) beltway road, “Libramiento Nororiente” that says Guadalajara and Morelia via corta por Atlacomulco (It is the same highway that goes to Zitácuaro – Valle de Bravo)
After about approximately an hour and a half, the road continues on to Zitácuaro, but you must take a left towards Valle de Bravo.
The entire journey from Mexico City to Valle de Bravo takes about two and a half hours.
There are three tolls. Approximately 165 pesos total.

From Toluca to Valle de Bravo (See map 1)

By car

As you leave the Toluca airport, take a left onto the bridge to La Via Lopez Portillo towards Toluca. On this road you will reach Paseo Tollocan where you turn left. Go towards Mexico City.
Before you arrive to Lerma, take the side road and make a U turn under the bridge to then take the beltway road A7 to Toluca (Atlacomulco, Guadalajara, Morelia, Zitácuaro, Valle de Bravo)
From this point on follow the directions that are indicated in the previous section (From Mexico City to Valle de Bravo)

From Valle de Bravo to Chamma Ling (Stupa) (see map 2)

Once you arrive to Valle de Bravo you will see an arch, go towards the left, the lake will be on your right.
After about 2 kilometers you will see a gas station on the left. At the gas station take a right along the river bank, go past the pier (Muelle Municipal) and continue until you reach the end of the road where you take a left on Ameyal. Go on Ameyal until you come to El Manguito road. Take a right here and continue until you reach a Y (where there is a cross) take the road on the left (Road to Toluca through Los Saucos) go on this road for one kilometer more. Here on the left you will see the road to Acatitlán and Monte Alto State Park. Take this road. (at about 100 meters to the left is the Hotel Misión Refugio del Salto) This road goes parallel to a river that runs down the left side. Continue until the road widens considerably, at about 300 meters ahead there is a detour to Los Álamos on the right. Take this dirt road and set your mileage to zero. (The Stupa is 6.7 kilometers from this point)
-At 3.2 kilometers there is a Y, take a left
-At 3.9 kilometers turn left where there are high tension towers that will be on the left. Go straight.
-At 5.1 kilometers there is a parking lot “Los Cuas” on the right where you register and leave your car. (It is not necessary to leave the car keys if you park where you do not block anybody. Please leave your car where you are told to park by the caretaker)
-From this point on the Stupa is 1.6 kilometers on foot, It takes approximately about twenty five minutes.

From Mexico City to Valle de Bravo

By Bus

From the Mexico City airport you can take the airport taxis which are safe and go to the Observatorio Bus Station (you can also go by subway)
At the bus station, buses leave every hour (from 5:50 am to 6:30 pm) Take the Zinabús that goes to Los Saucos ($113.00 pesos). The bus makes a stop in Toluca and continues on to Valle de Bravo. When you arrive, take a taxi to wherever you will be staying or to the Stupa.
The taxis charge $150.00 pesos from Valle de Bravo to the Stupa.
Both at the Mexico City airport and the Hotel Royal Pedregal you can take the bus “Caminante”www.caminante-aeropuerto.com.mx/ to the Toluca airport. The cost is $670.00 pesos.

From the Toluca airport to Valle de Bravo

By bus

Take a taxi to the bus station. At the bus station take the bus to Valle de Bravo that goes to los Saucos.

By taxi

You can take a taxi from the Toluca airport to Valle de Bravo. The cost is approximately $830.00 pesos.
